AUGUSTO BIANCO (King-Lamone 2002)
This example of a variable crispata shows the tendency of this group to develop twists and curls in an arbitrary pattern. This is a particularly animated group and creates a very play-full clump. My best re-blooming Crispata. Very well branched, low and compact in form, this one has drawn attention of keen collectors from Germany, England and Italy. Chosen by the well known award-winning iris breeder Augusto Bianco to bear his name.
I like using these variable crispatas in front of the linear elegance of ornamental grasses, which seem to bring out the very exotic nature of these flowers, and this one has all the sass and brazen attitude that I like personally to see in front of such well-behaved and elegant forms such as the grasses.
One of the last introductions from my many (many) crosses between GOLLIWOG and ASTERISK, this particularly sassy crispata always draws attention - for one, its form is an unruly, ever-changing Variable Crispata and, two, it blooms very early in EM, making it a stand-out in the early summer garden while most of the other Crispata hemerocallis are just showing scapes and buds.
Low and compact in growth at about 24inches, the flowers are about 6.5 inches are rippled-edged - almost ruffled - and have firm substance with sweet fragrance. The foliage is lush and ripply and dark green and an excellent background to the ripply-twirling flower segments. The green-tinged chrome-yellow flowers are produced on 2- and 3-way branched scapes and rebloom is almost immediate, with secondary scapes coming up as soon as the first have opened, creating a continuous bloom cycle from EM - ML.
