Deschampsis caespitosa 'Bronzschleier'(8 - Knöpnadel) H 50cm X W 50cm, Fl. 1.2 (4') An densely compact mound of dark
green, almost shiny foliage with thin, elegantly whispy , arching flowers
on thin, wiry stems. Has not been a floriferous grass for us yet. Only
two stalks per well-established plant so far. EURO - 8.00
Deschampsis caespitosa 'Goldgehänge'( Zeppelin)
Deschampsis caespitosa 'Goldtau'
(2 - Apple Court) H
35cm X W 40cm, Fl. 80 (?). A much more compact form of 'Bronzschleier',
with more open panicles and bead-like seed heads. The flower heads bloom
within the foliage and just above the tips of the realtive short foliage.
A foreground Deschampsia.
Deschampsis caespitosa 'Tauträger' (Zeppelin)
Deschampsis flexuosa 'Tatra Gold' (Apple Court) ACID SOIL H15cm (6') X W18cm (8'). Golden Fairy Grass, vibrant
acid yellow colour throughout the growing season, disappearing in the winter.
Rich, moist soil. Does not take dryness at all!!
Elymus (Leymus) arenarius (Apple Court)
H 60cm X W 60 - Very invasive, Fl.
1.5 (5') Grown for its grey-bluish leaves, this thuggish grass is native
to many parts of Europe and is one of the commonest roadside grasses here
in Italy. In a large pot, well-groomed, it is a very lovely grey-blue grass.
Forms long, loose clumps along our roadsides. EURO - 8.00
Elymus (Leymus) racemosus
(Zeppelin) H 65 X W indefinite. Another invasive but very beautiful
blue grass native of Europe. This one is not bluer for us than E. arenrius,
but due to its much wider and longer leaves, the overall effect is much
bluer. Superb in containers. EURO

Elymus hispidus (Fromefield) H 45 X W 30, Fl. 60cm. Hailed as the "Bluest
of Grasses", its leaves shimmer with sky-blue hints, outshining the
bluest festucas in out garden. Evergreen, loose clump forming, full sun
and good drainage. A very weak plant in England, where I got my first piece,
it looked better in our intense sun and heat here in Italy, but in the
second year the plant dwindled in the summer's heat and some plants seem
to die entirely. In the fall growth picked up. After 4 years, all plants
have died in the summer. They cannot take the heat.
Eragrostis curvula (8- Apple Court) H 120 X 1000, Fl 150 - 160. African or Weeping
Love Grass, a quickly establishing mass of very fine, sweeping foliage
from which flower scapes are produce continuously throughout the summer.
The scapes lean and sway in keeping with the mop-like mass of foliage.
I understand that it needs protection in winter in England; in America
reports say that it is fairly hardy. Good for slopes and steep hillsides
or where the mass of thin leaves can drape elegantly in full view. Seeds
itself freely in our garden but is not invasive. SUPERB! SUPERB! EURO

Erianthus ravennae(Saccharum ravennae) (Fromefield) A giant amoung grasses (Canna di Ravenna) Now a rarity amoung
grasses, this giant (to 4 metres in flowers) is much more compact than
a pampas grass and is more columnar, creating a very vertical effect in
flower. Leaves are wider therefore coarser in texture than the razor sharp,
slender leaves of the cordateris family, and form a divergent, almost fountaining
mound. EURO - 10.00
Festuca cinera 'Elijah Blue' (Apple Court) H 14cm X W 20cm. One of the smaller of the blue festucas. Colour
is best in full sun and in the late spring to late fall growing period.
Needs annual early-spring grooming. EURO - 5.00
Festuca cinera 'Fromefield Blue' (Fromefield) H 10cm X W 15cm. The smallest of the glaucus blue festucas with
neat, compact mounds and excellent growth. Needs the typical spring cleaning
to look its best, this one is also excellent in small container gardens
and pots. EURO - 8.00
Festuca glauca 'Azurit'
- Grey-silver, compact-growing blue-silver festuca,
still rare. EURO - 7.00
Festuca glauca 'Casa Rocca Seedling' (seed from Wisley) H 25 X W 40cm. A good blue colour with the same attributes as
'Elijah Blue' in growth and grooming. Flowers are
much taller than 'Elijah Blue' and open like a small fountain, creating
a distinction in the otherwise short and compact glauca selections.
EURO - 4.00
Festuca glauca 'Seeigel'
(Sea Urchin) An unusual fesutca in that it is
a soft olive-green colour and the structure of the the tight little clumps
are soft and relaxed. Works well for us in very light shade to full sun
and is an excellent counterpart to stiffer grasses like Calamagrostis 'Karl
Foerster' and 'Overdam' or the stiff, blue festucas. EURO - 6.00
Festuca mairei (1 - Zeppelin) - a very large clump of evergreen
leaves, medium-stiff, slightly arching. An architectural grass that looks
excellent in front of the fountaining leaves of Miscanthus s. 'Variegata'
Festuca tenuifolia ( Zeppelin)
Glyceria (aquatica) maxima
'Variegata' - The stunningly variegated moisture-loving
Glyceria often seen in literature. EURO

Hakonechloa macra (Karl Foerster Gartenzentrum)
Hakonechloa macra 'Mediopicta' (Apple
Court) H30-35cm
X W spreading more rapidly than 'Alboaurea' to 40-70cm, "narrowly
margined pale yellow, one usually wider than the other", (Grounds).
Hakonechloa macra 'Alboaurea' (Apple
Court) H30-35cm
X W spreading slowly 40-70cm, Golden Hakone Grass, deep, rich yellow with
thin stripes of green and sometimes white splashes, wiry reddish stems
EURO - 8.00
Helictrotrichon pratense (Apple Court) H 30cm X W 60cm. Somewhat stiff, low growing blueish
leaves, shiny green underneath. The two contrasting surfaces show up well
at closer inspection. Looks best in two and three year clumps. EURO
- 6.00
Helictrotrichon sempervirens (Tann-Rüti, Karl Foerster Gartenzentrum ) H 40cm X W 60cm. Very stiff,
low growing with blueish leaves, forming a pin cushion-like mound of spikey-blue
green. EURO - 7.00
Helictrotrichon sempervirens 'Saphirsprudel' (Zeppelin, Karl Foerster Gartenzentrum) H 40cm X W 50cm. Very stiff, low growing with
more blue in the leaves than the species, seen mostly in that the new growth
is already a blueish grey-green whereas the species has new growth in a
fresh green colour which turns blue green as it matures. It also forms
a pin cushion-like mound of spikey-blue green.
Holcus mollis 'Albovariegatus' (White Fog) (Fromefield)H 15cm X 23 - 30cm. Striped Creeping Soft
Grass. An easily contained spreading grass that grows by rhizomes which
are on or just below the surface of the soil, spreading out to a 30cm (12")
diameter. Grow in full to to partial shade in a well drained area. A grass
that looks best in the cooler seasons of spring and fall. Practically disappears
for us in our summer heat, returning when the evenings. EURO - 6.00
Hordum jubatum (annual) (Apple Court) H 50cm X W 30cm, Fl. 65cm. Foxtail Barley, The
awns of the ripening seed heads shimmer at first with light green touched
reddish, then turn into a mass of bristly, fur-like tan. Sow directly where
plant is to grow. The plant I acquired began to seed itself all around
the base of the plant, creating a carpet of fresh green plantlets by the
early fall.
Hystrix patula (1 - Tann-Rüti) --
H 35cm X 35cm, Fl 65 - 75cm. For semi-shade here in Italy, this unassuming
plant takes one importance structurally once the flowers begin to appear
- the zig-zagging of the scapes creating a fascinating point of interest
in early summer. The scapes are usually spent by late autumn, so they do
not add to the winter landscape of dry scapes and stalks. A fascinating
structural addition to the collection. EURO - 6.00
Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron' (Tann-Rüti)
Slow to emerge in Spring. Right after emergence, the tips of the leaves
turn a rich blood red. Heat tolerant, needs moisture. Very hardy. As Fall
approaches, the red colour begins to descend to the bottoms of the leaves,
creating a spectacular flame of colour! Superb. EURO - 9.00
Koeleria glauca (Fromefield) Resembles the festucas in shape and structure,
but has wider, flat leaves and much showier flower heads. The leaves of
this one are greyish green which also sets them apart visually from the
blue, spikey urchin-like clumps of the festucas. Needs excellent drainage
and winter wet can kill it off. Excellent in Italy.

Luzula sylvatica 'Aurea' (Hohe
Tatra- Apple Court) H
45cm A bright green, bromeliad-like woodrush. slowly spreading evergreen,
damp or dryish soil in SHADE. This one lights up bright golden yellow throughout
the winter months. EURO - 6.00
Luzula sylvatica 'Taggart's Cream' (Apple Court) An very unusually beautiful Woodrush. This evergreen
emerges white in spring, then turns cream, the cream the deepening to dark,
shiny green. The new foliage then being in sharp contrast to the dark green.
Later in the season, the foliage turns green. Shade in good soil.
