Melica altissima atropropurea (1 - Zeppelin)

Miscanthus sinensis ssp. condensatus 'Cosmopolitan' (Apple Court) H 1.8 X W 1.2m Fl.2.4m (9') One of the widest of the "variegata" white striped miscanthus hybrids. Makes a splendid, open and arching, sprawling clump. (dead after the severe winter of 1999 - defintely a more tender plant than has been published.) Replanted in a less frosty pocket (first start died after -16C for an extended period), where it has now grown magnificently. I wrote that it makes a sprawling clump, but this is the opposite of its habitus here. It is much more stable than Misc. sin. 'Variegata', having erect stems that grow to the thickness of a man's finger and having leaved up to 3.5 - 4 cm in width. It is less white than 'Variegata', but is more floriferous, frosting the top of the plant in a wine red in October. WONDERFUL. EURO - 25.00

Miscanthus sinesnsis ssp. condensatus 'Emerald Giant" (also under "Cosmopolitan Revert'. The all-green form of 'Cosmopolitan' - foliage as wide or wider than Giganteus, but on a much more compact plant. Very dramatic (teatrale - non dramatico!) in effect with bold leaves and good, red flowers in late September. Loves moisture and heat. EURO - 20.00

Miscanthus x hybrid 'Gigantea' (2 - Tann-Rüti) They are not sure if this one should be Miscanthus floridulus x sacchriflorus or Miscanthus gigantea! For us this wide-leafed grass grows strongly to ca. 3.5 metres and then blooms to about 4.5 metres, creating a vertical wall of green from early summer onwards. Strong growing but much more compact than floridulus, this is a nice screen plant, but needs a couple of metre diameter to fully develope. EURO - 15.00

Miscanthus x hybrid 'Gigantea' 'Aksel Olsen' (Tann-Rüti) Similar to gigantea except that the fall brings out more pink in the stems. A slight improvement, to me, that is very appreciated in designing for autumn colour. EURO - 18.00

Miscanthus oligostachys 'China' (Ernst Pagels) One of the fall-coloured of (I believe) oligostachys origin. More yellow than most.

Miscanthus oligostachys 'Purpurascens' (Hampton Court) (Miscanthus sinensis 'Purpurescens') This family of fall colouring Miscanthus needs more moisture than the slender Miscanthus sinesnsi types in order to do well. Very compact in growth, easily added to any mixed border setting, attention needs to be paid to plant flowers with orange and russet colours to coincide with its short, late August changing of leaf colour. EURO - 10.00

Miscanthus oligostachys 'Ghana' (Ernst Pagels) One of the best in our garden for fall colour - ranging from a beautiful red-burgundy to an ochre yellow, lasting until mid October where Miscanthus oligostachys 'Purpurascens' finishes already in mid September. Very slow growth. EURO - 35.00

Miscanthus x oligonensis 'Zwergelefant' (Ernst Pagels) Broader, smoother leaves than gracillimus, and much lower in growth, this large-flowering Miscanthus begins by swelling along the flowering stem a few inches from where the flower spike would normally open. As the flower grows within the sheath, the colours of the skin covering it begin to take on rich pinkish hues. The flowers burst open from the sheath from this strange swollen bulbous form and then gradually assume their normal position on the stem. A true novelty and a personal favourite. Only 2 - 3 plants in 2002!! EURO - 35.00

Miscanthus nepalensis (Greg Speichert) A rather rare species of dubious hardiness. The flowers are the most distinquishing feature right off the bat. They are produced in late summer and are of a smaller size and a rich bronze brown colour, forming a rounded puff once mature. Hardy from Zone 8 southwards, in Zone 7 it need good winter protection and preferably a south-western exposure.

Miscanthus sinensis 'Arabesque' (USA) A new dwarf-ish selection from the USA that is supposed to replace Graziella completely, with slender foliage and a very long flowering period. Very drought-tolerant for us, blooming for more than 2 months, with a deliacte tracery of light weight flowers. EURO - 15.00

Miscanthus sinensis 'Blütenwunder' (Greg Speichert) Heavy blooming medium dwarf gracillimus type (dead after the severe winter of 1999 - it never took after arriving from America) Reordered and planted in 2000, it has now grown exceptionally well, blooming for long periods even as a small plant. EURO - 20.00

Miscanthus sinensis 'Giraffe' (Ernst Pagels) A Zebrinus type, but taller. EURO - 30.00

Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus'(Thomsen-Stork) Super thin leafed miscanthus called Maidenhair Grass. Either very late or non flowering in Central and Northern Europe. A late-green Eulia grass, blooming for us in Italy in October - November, staying beautifully green even past the first few frosts, turning light beige brown, like the rest of the grasses, after the first really hard frost. Fountain-forming and long green, this grass is still a stable in the selections of grasses with excellent landscaping uses. EURO - 8.00

Miscanthus sinensis 'Flamingo' (Ernst Pagels) A new one for us in 2000, this one blooms with rich wine-red flowers and is a common one in many British and German collections.

Miscanthus sinensis 'Haiku' (Ernst Pagels) Another selection from China, from Mr Riedalsheimer. A pronounced cascade form in flower with very large flowers on tallish scapes on a med-dwarf plant. New for us and very nice so far. EURO - 25.00

Miscanthus sinensis 'Herman Muessel' (Ernst Pagels) A beautiful new arrival from China, from Mr Riedelsheimer, with foilage that remains rch green very late into the autumn, defying frosts until winter sets in. A dwarf in stature, with delicately thing flowers, it grows as compact as 'Nippon' but flowers are higher above the foliage. Doing very well for us in semi-ombra (partial shade). EURO - 25.00

Miscanthus sinensis 'Hinjo' (Greg Speichert) Very dwarf 'Zebrinus type' with arching foliage. Very winter hardy. Its leaves have a lighter substance and its large spots are thinner than tose of the 'Strictus' type, making it a better specimen for lightly shaded areas here in Italy. This and the next Mischanthus selection, 'Kirk Alexander' are, to me, the most important new developments in the direct dwarf, compact Miscanthus cultivars and are very welcome additions to the mixed border! EURO - 25.00

Miscanthus sinensis 'Kirk Alexander' (Greg Speichert) This is basically a dwarf 'Strictus' type that has all the best qualities of compactness, excellent sun resistant qualities, late to bloom and superb winter hardiness. It is an excellent companion for mid-summer flora in golden yellow and yellow and is nicely accented with the yellow stems of Pennestum 'Gelbstiel' in early Autumn. EURO - 25.00

Miscanthus sinensis 'Kleine Fontäne' (Zeppelin) Blooms in Late July - Aug, Leaves held in an arching, fountain form with the plumes having a distinct, graceful, pendant form. An entirely different flower structure and excellent in contrast to the many stiffly upright Miscanthus hybrids.

Miscanthus sinensis 'Kleine Silberspinne' ( Zeppelin)Blooms in Late July, Leaves held horizontally in a stiff manner Relatively large plumes of silvery grey.

Miscanthus sinensis 'Kleine Silberfeder' (Zeppelin)

Miscanthus sinensis 'Little Kitten' ( Greg Speichert) 12inches tall, a magnificent true miniature, with gracillimus-type leaves which mound nicely but is less graceful in blooming habit due to shorter, stiff scapes. Very hardy and good in increase, this miniature is excellent in detail planting and, once well established, survives periods of drought. (formerly Yaku Jima) A superb! front-of-the-border grass, blooming late summer for us in Italy, and conintuing well into the autumn. EURO - 12.00

Miscanthus sinensis 'Malepartus' (Zeppelin) (Apple Court) A sure-flowering wider-leaf, semi-dwarf Miscanthus. The flowers are at first a rich wine-burgundy, later fluffing-out to a biscuit tan. Indespensible in the early autumn landscape! Still one of themost important of the fall-colour Miscanthus, this one, when young, flowers well above the foliage. As the plants mature, the leaves grow up all the way to the flowers, creating a very compact impression. With age, too, it grows to about 170cm. EURO - 8.00

Miscanthus sinensis 'Morning Light' (Apple Court) 1.5m in leaf (4') A white stripe variegated 'Gracillimus' type, silvery midrib. A delicate, exquisite grass!! From a distance the variegation reads as a lighter greyish-silver green; upon closer inspection, one takes in the delicate details of the white, every so slightly tinged pink variegation. FABULOUS, FABULOUS, but delicately so. EURO - 12.00

Miscanthus sinensis 'Nippon' (Apple Court) 1.5 metres flower. Upright, short, rather stiff miscanthus, blooming faithfully in Mid July through August. Overall impression is an ultralight scaffolding of thin leaves topped by pale slender fingers. Perhaps my favourite dwarf 'Gracimilus' type due to its compact, distinctly different structure and elegant bloom. This one can be used in dryish positions, on slopes and in detail plantings. This one is distinct in that even though it is of the very slender-leaf family of Miscanthus, it has excellent red-burgundy foliage when young. EURO - 8.00

Miscanthus sinensis 'Professor Richard Hansen' (Ernst Pagels) A brand new miscanthus seedling from Mr Pagels. Tall and exceptionally free-flowering. Slender foliage. EURO - 35.00

Miscanthus sinensis 'Puencktchen' (Ernst Pagels) A form of 'Strictus' that has much fewer yellow bands - rather yellow spots. The particular distinction of this yellow-banded type is that the yellow-colouration is located in "spots" (hence the name "little spot" in German) and in its sem-dwarf habitus, but my personal experience is that this one is much less attractive than, say, the new 'Strictus' type 'Kirk Alexander'. Perhaps it would do better for us here in Italy with some shade, as does 'Hinjo'. EURO - 9.00

Miscanthus sinensis 'Purpurescens' (Hampton Court) see Miscanthus oligostachys above

Miscanthus sinensis 'Silberturm' (Ernst Pagels)

Miscanthus sinensis 'Strictus' (Tann-Rüti) Vertical habit similar in leaf variegation to Zebrinus, but Zebrinus is has a much more spreading, open habit. This one comes into its own later than the other miscanthus sinensis hybrids, i.e. toward mid August, early September. Literally spectacular when backlit with the evening sun. EURO - 15.00

Miscanthus sinensis 'Undine' (Ernst Pagels) One of the "fountain" flowering selections of Ernst Pagels in East Friesland, Germany in which the leaves reach to about 130 - 140cm and the flowering stalks to about 220cm

Miscanthus sinensis 'Variegata' (Tann-Rüti) A most spectacular variegated grass, boldly striped creamy ivory and green, growth erect, loosening toward the top of the leaves and spreading slightly. A few leaves break habit and arch out of the leaf column to created a well-contained but relaxed looking form. In our sandy loam, the leaf habit opens and topples when the bloom sheaths begin to open in late summer, creating a bright floppy clump. EURO - 10.00

Miscanthus sinensis 'Vorlaeufer' (Ernst Pagels) A good fall-colour miscanthus with bright golden to ochre-yellow foliage colour.

Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus' This form of the yellow-banded miscanthus is more lax in growth and more open in form, very distinctivly different from the 'Strictus' forms that are often sold under this name. EURO - 20.00

Miscanthus tinctoria 'Nana Variegata' (Apple Court) H38cm X W 45cm to gently spreading. Fl65-70cm. An extremely rare Miscanthus species selection, a loose, spreading clump, fresh yellow-green leaves with narrow greenish-cream-white stripes. The variegation is not as sharply contrasting as some, hence it creates a nicely muted play on green and ivory. A nice groundcover in smaller places. EURO - 25.00

Miscanthus trasmorensis - EURO - 10.00

Miscanthus yakumensis (Apple Court) H 75cm X W 55cm Fl. 1.2m (4') A shorter growing miscanthus species with a much more graceful habit than 'Nippon' in that the very slender pale green leaves arch gracefully, creating a mound from which the flowers arise. It takes a good 3 years of undisturbed growth to bloom well for us, defying late frosts until late in December, it almost appears evergreen. (That is, if I have the correctly named plant!) This plant is like a smaller version of 'Gracillimus' EURO - 10.00

Miscanthus sin? Yakujima Dwarf - a very short version of the above. A wonderful addition to the shorter, denser Miscanthus selections. EURO - 10.00

Molinia caerulea ssp. caerulea 'Claerwen' (Apple Court) Upright small clumps of soft, thin leaves. Variegation is white-creamish through green with variegated stems. Makes a bright clump. Seed heads are a dark, contrasting brownish colour.

Molinia caerulea ssp. caerulea 'Edith Dudszus' (Apple Court) Upright small clumps of soft, thin leaves. Dark red-purple stems, dense spikes of a rich purplish colour.

Molinia caerulea ssp. arundinacea 'Karl Foerster' (Knöpnadel) Leaf mound: 75 -80cm, Flower panicles: 200cm. Slightly larger than caerulea ssp. caerulea selections, this is, to me, the ultimate in elegance achieved only in the ornamental grasses. The foliage is dark green, the scapes begin to show in mid to late July, creating a near transparent fountain of slender wiry stems. Elegance supreme! EURO - 9.00

Molinia caerulea ssp. arundinacea 'Windspiel' (Zeppelin)

Molinia caerulea ssp. c.'Moorhexe' (Apple Court) The most compact of the c.ssp.c selections at 60cm (2')

Molinia caerulea ssp. c.' 'Strahlenquelle' Apple Court) 3' in flower, arching habit and good autumn colours.

Molinia caerulea ssp. a. 'Transparent' (Knöpnadel) Similar to 'Karl Foerster' but the flowering stems are less laden with flower, more tightly arranged on the stalks and slightly more erect, hence the name "transparent". One can look through the scapes as though they were transparent.

Molinia caerulea ssp. c.'Variegata' (Apple Court) 23 -30 cm (9 - 12") "Striped Purple Moor Grass" Narrow, open panicles, variegated , leaves turn nice yellow in the fall, Late to emerge in the Spring. A beautiful light-structured variegated grass. Not a particularly good grass for Italy, as it suffers greatly from the dry heat in summer.

Muhlenbergia japonica 'Variegata' (sometimes calles 'Cream Delight') (Apple Court) 15 - 20 cm X 60 (2') Culms are erect on outset of growth, later becoming trailing. Overall impression is of a delicate-looking, light-weight structured, floppy miniature variegated bamboo. Could prove useful as a groundcover. Responds well to heat and full sun in a rich, moisture-retentive soil here in Italy. A personal favourite. Superb with blue-leaf grasses. EURO - 10.00

Oryzopsis lessonii (provenance.: Ventnor Botanical Garden) Oryzopsis lessoniana? (the same plant as Stipa arundinacea) (Rice Grass) A small, thin leafed, rounded clump forming stipa that looks excellent in pots or in the front of the border. In drought conditions or in the fall, this grass takes on a rainbow of speckles in orange, russet red, reddish, olive, brown and green. Beautiful in pots. A personal favourite.
