DANCE ON THE WIND (1999)
(TYLWYTH TEG X ASTERISK)
5in, Midlate, 52 - 72in, 2 - 3, sometimes 4- way branching, 18 -25 buds per scape, NOCT, DOR. Superb increase. A rich violet-lilac self with light yellow throat with hints of green in the heart.
After seeing what TYLWYTH TEG could do for branching and bud counts, I tried it with my favourite pollen parent, ASTERISK. The results were hundreds of superbly branched, slender flowers, but unfortunately few had very distinctive faces. By this I mean that 90% of the 215 seedlings of this cross were simple trumpets. Most looked like early David Hall pinks (1950 -1960's). This one was nick-named "purple wow" because if its tall, superbly branched scapes and curly, twisting, open violet flowers. It set seed redly and bloomed for three weeks in its maiden bloom period. The illustration below shows its branching. The name accepted by the AHS Registrar "DANCE ON THE WIND" describes it well.
This past year, the summer of 2002, this cultivar stunned us completely - it grew over my head!! And I'm 6'1"" tall. Superbly branched, very elegant looking this flower TOWERED over the other daylilies in the border and formed a literal fountain of rosy violet! Important is to note that this and some other really tall daylilies can flop if planted in too rich a soil. She stood firm for us, but other years, when I had piled on the manure and kept her moist, the scapes leaned out and flopped.
One of the tallest daylilies ever registered, I'm very happy to have this beautiful crispata in our collection and now finally have enough of it to offer for sale.
