ASLAN'S MANE (King-Lamone 2002)
(YAZOO GREEN OCTOPUS X FOUR CORNER1)
A rare find in the seedling patch, this cross yielded only nocturnal doubles, which was quite a joy, but only this one had slender petals. From YAZOO GREEN OCTOPUS' background of round and ruffled forms, most of the flowers were diverse hose-in-hose or thick with congested petalloids. This seedling has displayed this type of four-on-four to five-on-five doubling 100% of the time, which has made it very exceptional.
This well-branched seedling was a pleasure to find and to work with: very easy pod and pollen fertility. Very slow increase for us, but hardy, actually going dormant very late in the fall, so I guess it would be considered a Semi Evergreen by many standards.
In the meantime this consistent polytepal is the closest thing to a double Exotic Form that I know. Nicknamed "Aslan's Mane".
The typical form out of this cross can be seen in this illustration below, to give you an idea what a difference this seedling's form made.
EXTREMELY slow to increase for us due to its evergreen parentage and our very frosty winters. NFS
